While it is perfectly possible in the case above, I do get a little tired of that constant assumption about being gay as well.
As a man, why do so many women come to that exact same conclusion about me? Just because I am not interested in a romantic relationship, and only want to be a friend, that does not automatically mean that I am gay. I am not deeply offended or anything, just very tired of this constant and totally incorrect assumption.
Men are actually capable of wanting to be just friends with women. It does happen. Why do so few believe it?

Because it’s a way of explaining away your lack of attraction that doesn’t make them feel unattractive themselves.
Women are bombarded their entire lives with the messages that 1) heterosexual men (secretly or openly) want to sleep with every woman they talk to, and 2) their sexual attractiveness is the greatest measure of their self-worth.
